The work in this unit also offered * the opportunity to use ~ scientific ideas to explain some causes of illness and decay, to relate micro-organisms to food production and to relate science to ~ personal health. " Disease Section 1: Germs and disease & Section 2: What makes people ill? ^ is able to recognise that diseases can be passed on by very small organisms and that this idea is based on scientific evidence. ^ was able to identify some illnesses and some conditions were caused by micro-organisms. ^ can explain why cleaning teeth regularly helps prevent tooth decay and gum disease. " Decay Section 3: Mouldy food & Section 4: What causes decay? ^ recognises that micro-organisms cause food to decay. ^ is able to explain that micro-organisms grow and reproduce on food and that this can cause food poisoning. ^ was able to identify some things eg leaves, grass, paper which decay. ^ has described the consequences if materials did not decay. ^ is able to explain that micro-organisms grow and that they 'feed' on the material, causing it to decay. " Microbes Section 5: Finding out about yeast & Section 6: Micro-organisms in food production ^ was able to recognise that bread rises when it contains yeast but without yeast, dough does not rise. ^ has described that when yeast has sugar and is kept in a warm place it produces bubbles of gas but without sugar very little gas is produced. ^ was able to explain that yeast needs sugar and warmth to grow which supports the idea that it is living. # was succssful in identifying ~ own examples of where micro-organisms are used in the production of food.
